During the debate on the balance between family and working life taken place in the plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels, Golden Dawn MEP Lampros Fountoulis took the floor. He pointed out that the creation of a family constitutes the most important moment in the life of people, which at the same time ensures the perpetuation of the Nation. Also, he required support by any means to young parents and the provision of incentives so that the huge demographic problem will be solved.
“The creation of a family constitutes perhaps the most important moment in the life of a person. Also, it is the way that ensures the perpetuation of our Nations. Thus, it must be protected by any means and young people must be encouraged to make this big step in their lives.
This applies even more to those who work. We must not allow the creation of a family to be punished due to work; neither unnecessary burden must be placed upon one of the two parents, either the father or the mother. We totally support the establishment of the paternal leave right both for the two parents on a European level.
Moreover, we think that specific and legalized possibilities must be established regarding flexible working hours and leaves for the parents until the age, when the children will be able to serve by themselves an important part of their daily needs; according to us, this must be applied until the age of twelve years old.
Ultimately, special care must be provided to the parents with children with special needs, since they face even bigger challenges than the rest of the parents, along with a carers’ leave for those workers with a seriously ill or dependent relative.”
