Immediate tax reduction

During the debate on fair taxation for a just society taken place in the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Golden Dawn MEP Lampros Fountoulis took the floor. He pointed out the sacrifices made by the Greek people and the bloodletting they have endured by the current taxation system, and he required the immediate and drastic tax reduction.

‘’We cannot debate here today on fair taxation when at the same time the European Union itself through the austerity and fiscal adaptation policies imposes on some member-states unreal taxations. In Greece, many factors prove the reasons behind this unfairness of the current taxation. The wealth production along with the incomes have collapsed but not the tax revenues. The citizens are experiencing reductions in their incomes and the biggest part of these incomes are exploited by the state.

The tax rates have been increased, the tax-free allowance has been reduced, tax exemptions have been deregulated and new taxes have been added (e.g. the unified property ownership tax, the solidarity levy, special consumption taxes etc.). Within eight years, the special taxes have been increased by 94%. The revenues from the taxes on the citizens’ property have reached a sevenfold increase, from 500 million in 2008 to 3.6 billion.

Currently Greece is third on the list about the EU member-states with the highest insurance contributions. High taxation not only hinders the economic growth but also leads thousands of self-employed persons out of the labour market.

Moreover, the negative taxation rate of return since after the memoranda the level of social benefits and the government agencies has been dramatically degraded.

Taxation must be reduced immediately, otherwise the social repercussions will be tremendous.’’
